Roads Campaign

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) Drive for Better Roads for South East Queensland campaign will step up a gear and raise the awareness of the campaign over the coming weeks.

Launched in June 2006, the purpose of the campaign is to attract additional Federal Government funding, specifically AusLink II, for several key roads in South East Queensland. Some of the roads in need of funding include the Bruce Highway north of Caboolture, the Gateway Arterial precinct, Toowoomba range crossing, the M1 in the Logan precinct, at Nerang and Brisbane's planned Northern Link Tunnel.

In its initial phase, the campaign involved briefings with Federal MPs located in the region and key partners, including Qld Trucking Association, RACQ, Commerce Qld, PCA, UDIA, HIA and the Infrastructure Association of Queensland.

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) commissioned Alan Morton to prepare a research report, The Drive for Better Roads in South East Queensland, to support the campaign and provide facts to support the case.

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) commissioned further research to investigate the views of South East Queensland residents relating to roads. The research was conducted over two days late last year and the subsequent report, formed the basis of further briefings for Federal Coalition MPs.

The research found that the issue of roads was a key concern for people living in the region, after water, roads was equal second with health. Investment in roads to reduce traffic congestion and pollution and to increase efficiency and safety was considered highly important by the majority of people surveyed.

The research also found that the state of the roads in the region is seen to be compromising safety, amenity, efficiency and the environment. Roads are viewed as part of the broader issue of infrastructure for the region. If the problems with roads are not addressed people surveyed felt the consequences would be an increase in pollution and affect the overall ability of the region to function.  Further and critically to this SEQ residents consider their lifestyle is at risk because of the state of the roads.

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) commenced the third phase of the campaign in August 2007, this involved an online survey, promotion of the Drive for Better Roads video on the Council of Mayors (SEQ) website and on YouTube, radio and print advertising as well as ongoing communication with campaign supporters, State and Federal MPs, and the SEQ community.
