The Council of Mayors (SEQ) was established in September 2005 as an independent political advocacy organisation that represents the interests of the 1 in 7 Australians who live in Australia's fastest growing region - South East Queensland.
As the peak advocacy body for local government in the region, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) aims to influence Federal and State Government policies and funding priorities.
With an estimated 4 million residents expected to be living here by 2026, future growth needs to be supported by first class infrastructure, a reliable water supply, economic development and a reduction in road congestion.
The Council of Mayors (SEQ) is currently working on a number of critical issues:
1. Water - the challenge of the continuing drought remains the number one concern for every Mayor in SEQ. We've been working with the State Government on water reform, to secure long term water supplies for the region. This includes finalising the SEQ Regional Water Supply Strategy, the review of institutional arrangements, amendments to the Water Act 2000 and the establishment of the Queensland Water Commission. For more information on the review of institutional arrangements, please go to our Water Reform webpage.
2. Roads and Transport - in June 2006, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) launched our campaign - The Drive for Better Roads in South East Queensland. Our aim is to lobby the federal government for a fairer share of funding for SEQ's National Highways.
3. SEQ Regional Plan - each local government is currently working on their individual Local Growth Management Strategies to meet the requirements of the SEQ Regional Plan. The Council of Mayors (SEQ) is looking for links and opportunities to coordinate these strategies.
